Hawaii tourism – Sad, true, but oh well…

Native Hawaiians are not happy with the way tourism portrays their culture.
Having lived on Oahu for several years I would have to agree. I can’t even hear the mention of Don Ho or “Tiny Bubbles” without nearly having a seizure.
However, tourism dollars are a significant support factor for the Hawaiian islands – Oahu and Waikiki being at the front of the line. Some people visit Hawaii for this and nothing further. Others visit other islands or actually get all the way around Oahu which is what a tourist HAS to do to really see how islanders live outside the tourist traps.
You can’t gain so much from heavily marketed tourism and then whine about culture later. But, making an effort at de-commercializing the first impression of the place – starting right at the airport, wouldn’t hurt my feelings…
